National Adoption Day

National Adoption Day is the Saturday before Thanksgiving in the United States, a day about permanent families for children in foster care.

The next date is November 21, 2026. Dates follow Mountain Time, America/Denver. Stories below are from the archive.

How to take part

Free and safe. No fee, no student email, and no trip taken alone.

  • Read one archive story about a child who was helped, and notice what adults actually did.
  • Donate outgrown children's books or coats to a drive that is already organized. Money is not required.
  • If you want to help a foster program, use a link already printed on a story. Do not contact a child directly.

For classrooms

A short prompt for a teacher to use with children. This page is for adults.

A teacher can ask what a kind welcome looks like, using a story from the archive. Do not ask a student whether they are adopted or to describe a family.

More stories a teacher can read aloud are in the Kids section.
