Local veterans unveiled five new monuments at Derby Veterans Park on Saturday, WCAX reported. The park was built in 1866. Four of the monuments honor wars the park had never marked. The fifth is for everyone else who served.

Jeffrey Young, who joined the Army in 1997 and deployed with the Vermont National Guard, helped lay wreaths at the new stones. He said much of what veterans do is peacetime work and duty back home, and that the waiting can be harder on a family than on the person in uniform. His stepson now serves with the Vermont National Guard. Maj. Gen. Henry Harder told the crowd the monument recognizes everyone who has worn the uniform, in peace or in war, and that the Northeast Kingdom has stood by its veterans for a long time.
