A tree nursery opened in Kaliua in September is raising seedlings for village forest reserves and for woodlots at schools, hospitals, prisons, and villages. Tanzania's Daily News reported the plan on October 9, 2026. The nursery is part of the Miombo Collaborative Forest Management Project. Its target is one million seedlings, and it is built to hold more than that. Six nurseries in the project are expected to produce 4.7 million seedlings between them.
National coordinator Zainabu Bungwa said the plants are meant for community forests and for public plots, with women and young people involved in the work. Sadock Gobanya, the Tanzania Forest Services conservator for Kaliua, said crews are filling tubes and sowing now. Distribution is planned from December 2026 through March 2027. The mix includes mkongo, white teak, East African mahogany, acacia, eucalyptus, pine, mango, and other fruit trees. The district was chosen because of tree cutting and charcoal making. Residents are already preparing soil, sand, and manure. The seedlings are not in the forest yet.
