Uganda's wildlife authority says eight adult male southern white rhinos are back in wild reserves. Nile Post reported on October 24, 2026, that executive director James Musinguzi described the move at a stakeholder breakfast in Kampala. Four of the rhinos went to Ajai Wildlife Reserve and four to Kidepo Valley National Park.

The animals were bred at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Musinguzi said that herd had grown from zero to 61, and that the transfers showed Uganda could carry out a restoration of this kind with its own staff and equipment. The report is an account of work done during the 2025/2026 financial year. It does not say the eight males have yet produced calves in the reserves, and it does not give a new nationwide census beyond the sanctuary figure of 61.

The same briefing covered patrols, habitat work, and community meetings. The rhino line is the one that changes the map: two reserves now hold southern white rhinos that the sanctuary raised.

For the classroom

Nile Post reported on October 24, 2026, that Uganda's wildlife authority told a meeting in Kampala about eight adult male southern white rhinos. Four were moved to Ajai Wildlife Reserve and four to Kidepo Valley National Park. The rhinos were bred at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where the herd grew from none to 61. The director, James Musinguzi, said Ugandan teams did the move with their own skills and equipment. The news is that these eight rhinos are now in the two reserves. It is not a count of every rhino in the country, and it does not say calves have been born there yet.
