Each week at Crescent Hill Baptist Church in Louisville, volunteers who call themselves the Flower Buds turn leftover flowers into vases, WTOC reported. The blooms come from weddings, funerals, wholesalers, supermarkets, florists, galas, and banquets. The group cuts and rearranges them, then delivers about 100 vases a week to nursing homes, the VA hospital, assisted living, and shelters.
Since 2006 they have passed 90,000 vases. Volunteer Stephanie Mullins said the flowers would otherwise have been thrown away. Veteran Clem Russell takes particular pride in the deliveries to the VA hospice. The milestone is a count of vases that reached someone, week after week.
