John Cooper of Sandwich spends weekdays behind the wheel for people who need a ride to cancer treatment, Boston 25 News reported. The retired high-tech executive volunteers with the American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery program, which arranges free trips to appointments.

For six weeks he picked up Kerry Sullivan every weekday and drove her from Sandwich to Plymouth. Sullivan said a mass on her jaw led to a cancer diagnosis. Her plan was six weeks of radiation five days a week, chemotherapy once a week, and immunotherapy once a month for nine months. Cooper said the volunteering let him help someone through a hard stretch. Dr. Ethan Glazener, a radiation oncologist at Cape Cod Healthcare in Hyannis, said a treatment plan only works if the patient can get there.
