The reporting lives at Central News Agency. Our summary is checked against it, and we link it on every story.

Two green turtles that were hurt as hatchlings on Wang'an went back into the sea on October 27. Taiwan's Central News Agency reported that the Penghu National Scenic Area Administration released them on the beach in front of the Green Turtle Tourism and Conservation Center, with the county agriculture and fisheries bureau and a fisheries research centre. Teachers and students from the island stood with the team.

Staff found both animals during nesting patrols on the Wang'an sand, one in September 2023 and one in December 2023, already injured. After a long period of care they were moved in April 2026 to the research centre's shelter on the island. A health check this year found they could manage in the ocean, and the release was timed for high tide.

The count is these two turtles. The agency did not publish a nest total for the season.

For the classroom

Wang'an is an island in Penghu, Taiwan, where green sea turtles nest. Central News Agency reported that on October 27, 2026, two green turtles were released on the beach in front of the island's turtle centre. Teachers and students watched. Both turtles had been hurt as hatchlings on that beach in 2023, and patrol teams found them. They were cared for, then checked at a fisheries station in 2026. The release waited for high tide, so the crawl to the water was shorter. The story is these two turtles, not every nest on the island.

  1. How long were these turtles looked after before they went back to the sea?
  2. Why did the team wait for high tide?
  3. What is one thing people can do to keep a nesting beach dark and quiet?
