Two Navy veterans were paired with service dogs on Friday aboard the battleship North Carolina in Wilmington, WECT reported. The Wilmington nonprofit Canines for Service presented Basil to Patrick Walker and Bogey to Anne Leanos. Each dog is trained for the physical or psychological needs of that one handler.
Erin Lewis, a spokesperson for the group, said the dogs do more than a visitor might guess from watching them. She described graduates who returned a year or three years later and talked about the difference the dogs had made in their lives as fathers and husbands. Founded in 1996, Canines for Service places dogs at no cost with veterans who have service-connected post-traumatic stress, a traumatic brain injury, or a mobility limitation. The group said it has completed more than 100 of those partnerships. Friday's ceremony added two. It does not mean every veteran waiting for a dog now has one.
