Every Wednesday, Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Acton opens for a free community supper, WCVB reported. Since 2012 the church has served more than 65,000 meals. A typical night is about 110: roughly 80 people eat in the building and about 30 meals go out the door.
A rotating group of 20 to 30 volunteers cooks, serves, and cleans. Food and money are donated, and local farms often send produce. Organizer Jack Brophy said it is not only a soup kitchen. Anyone can sit down to a full meal without paying. Head cook Rose Saia said nobody leaves hungry. The gathering draws retirees, longtime guests, and students, including a high-school junior who started volunteering in sixth grade.
