Thomas McGrimley, 42, of Cheshire, Connecticut, slipped on a steep section of ledge near the summit of Mount Moriah on the first day of a planned three-day hike, the Conway Daily Sun reported. He was with three companions, about four miles up from the parking lot in Bean's Purchase. New Hampshire Fish and Game was notified around 2 p.m. on October 22. McGrimley could not put weight on his lower leg. His companions called 911, and a passing hiker splinted the leg and stayed with them.

While crews were on the way, McGrimley got about 0.63 miles down the Carter-Moriah Trail with help from his companions. The first rescuers reached him at 6:15 p.m. Conservation officers and volunteers from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue and Lakes Region Search and Rescue answered the call. Fish and Game said 24 volunteers took part. They placed his leg in a vacuum splint, carried him in a litter, and reached the parking lot at 10:55 p.m. A Gorham ambulance crew checked him and took him to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin. The agency said the group had come prepared, with gear and supplies for several days.
