Columbus City Schools and the Columbus Metropolitan Library started a partnership Thursday that gives every second-grader a free field trip to the Main Library. Liberty Elementary kicked it off with stories, songs, and dancing in the Children's Area. Students used Success Cards, which also work as library cards, to check out books, and they went home with backpacks.
Nearly 4,500 second-graders at 79 elementary schools are included. The Columbus Metropolitan Library Foundation is paying for transportation and the program. Library CEO Lauren Hagan called second grade a critical year for literacy. Superintendent Dr. Angela Chapman said she wants students to leave curious enough to come back.
