An estimated 30,000 to 35,000 people filled Moorland Farm in Far Hills for the 105th Far Hills Race Meeting. The day is six steeplechase races and a long tailgate tradition. Chairman Ron Kennedy said some families have kept the same spot for generations, and that the unusual part is simply how long the gathering has lasted.
The nonprofit that runs the meeting has raised more than $22 million over the years for regional health care. The beneficiaries include RWJ University Hospital Somerset and five smaller organizations near Far Hills. Kennedy said that money can matter most to the smaller groups. Organizers have also added a Hunt Club area with a DJ for people who want something besides the rail.
