Grand County has a new animal shelter, and the neighbors who helped pay for it got to cut the leash. Denver7 reported on September 29, 2026, that the sheriff's office held a grand opening over the weekend for the Grand County Pet Pals Animal Shelter. The public reopening was set for Thursday, October 1, while staff moved in and set the building up.

Growth in the county had pushed the shelter out of its old building. The Granby Sanitation District, which owns that building, extended the lease month to month until the new one was ready. Community members and Denver7 viewers donated thousands toward the project. Sheriff Brett Schroetlin said the building shows what the county can do when people work together to care for its animals. The county signed a 10-year lease on the new shelter.
