Around 9:25 p.m. Thursday, Halifax County Sgt. Alex Wood was sent to a trailer fire in the 100 block of Haywood Drive, just outside Roanoke Rapids. WITN reported on October 9, 2026, that a 911 caller said a family member was living alone inside and had not escaped. A woman at the scene told Wood her dad was still in the home. He called firefighters, ran to the trailer, and kicked in the locked front door.
Deputies said the inside was engulfed. Wood dropped down and crawled, calling out until the man answered. He found the resident lying on the floor and pulled him out. EMS treated Wood and released him. The man he rescued is in stable condition.
