Alexander Reis, a Life Scout with Troop 305 and a junior at Kearny High School, aimed to collect 500 pairs of eyeglasses for his Eagle Scout project. The Observer reported that neighbors, schools, businesses, community groups, and St. Stephen's Church brought in 3,673 pairs. The Lions Club will distribute them to people who need glasses.
The project started close to home: a family member had lost his sight. On September 27, Reis also hosted a community health fair at St. Stephen's, with free vision screenings, blood-pressure checks, podiatry information, and other wellness stops. Nearly 45 people used the vision screening. He said he had not pictured a 500-pair goal turning into thousands.
