Children waiting with their families at the Charles County Department of Social Services in La Plata can now read a book and take it with them. The Southern Maryland Chronicle reported on September 29, 2026, that the Charles County Public Library supplied about 100 children's books, in good condition, from its own collection for a new corner aimed at kids under 7.
The department asked for the books so they would leave with children rather than stay in the waiting room. Library marketing coordinator Ashley Littleton said the point is to put stories in kids' hands outside a library building. Director Dr. Tanisha Sanders welcomed the partnership. Because the books are meant to go home, the library will keep restocking, and the all-volunteer Citizens for the Charles County Public Library will add more titles.
