ABC reporter Will Murray and bystander Daniel Hainey pulled a driver from a four-wheel-drive that stalled and began to sink in floodwater on Buchanan Road in Morayfield, north of Brisbane. ABC News reported the rescue on October 22, 2026, after about 170 millimetres of rain that morning.

Murray called Triple Zero, handed the phone to camera operator Liz Pickering, and swam to the vehicle. The rear passenger door opened. The three of them reached shallow water and hugged. Emergency services arrived about 10 minutes later. The driver said he had not seen the signage and had not realized how deep the water was.

Pickering told ABC that the pair saved the man's life. Murray's warning was the same one Queensland authorities repeat: do not drive into floodwater. The Queensland Fire Department also advises people not to swim in it. Everyone got out. The story is this rescue, not a claim that the flooding is over.
