Teacher Logan McCarrell built a four-level veterinary science program at Lucy Beckham High School in Mount Pleasant, and at its center is Meowdog Animal Rescue, a nonprofit she founded in 2023 that students help run, The Post and Courier's Education Lab reported on October 2, 2026.

The rescue takes in dogs and cats from shelters in rural counties such as Colleton and Sumter. Students care for them at school, give medications and vaccines under supervision, handle adoption paperwork, organize adoption events, and place animals in foster and adoptive homes. One sophomore builds the rescue's website.

Principal Anna Dassing said students who struggle in other classes often find a home in the program. Student Scarlett Kingston described fostering a dog named Steven who had been considered for euthanasia and is now in a happy home. The rescue relies on donations and long-term fosters over school breaks.
