The Orange Cove Branch Library opened its outdoor space on October 1 and invited the town to help it grow. The Mid Valley Times reported on October 5, 2026, that the new Gardeners Guild will meet Thursdays at 6 p.m. to tend a Healing Herb Garden. Two student volunteers and a few donated pots are the start: two young lavender plants, St. John's wort, and society garlic.
The garden had been in the plans since the branch opened in 2009 and then sat behind a locked door. Librarian Joel Perez, with senior library assistants Karina Sanchez and Cynthia Orellano and library assistant Gail Dahl, got the "do not enter" sign taken down. Perez said he wants the bed to teach herb traditions from many cultures, and he is especially hoping teenagers will claim the club so it lasts.
