Ben Nickell and Anne Koski of Pocatello have stood on the highest point in every one of Idaho's 44 counties, KIFI reported. They are two of just 15 people known to have done it. The project took ten years and started by accident in 2016, when they climbed Hyndman Peak near Sun Valley with friends and then started asking what to climb next. For a few years they managed two or three peaks a year before the county list looked finishable.
Idaho's highest summit is Mount Borah, in Custer County. Nickell said height is not the same as difficulty. Some peaks are hard because the back roads are remote, rough, and full of downed trees, snow, and mud. Their last hike, Bare Peak Northwest on the Idaho-Montana border in September 2026, was the hardest. They expected a little more than 16 hours and spent 22 on boulders and side hills that never seemed to end.
For the classroom
Ben Nickell and Anne Koski live in Pocatello, Idaho. Over ten years they hiked the highest point in each of the state's 44 counties. They did not plan the whole list at the start. In 2016 they climbed Hyndman Peak near Sun Valley with friends, liked it, and kept looking for the next mountain. Only about 15 people are known to have finished all 44. Their last hike, in September 2026, was Bare Peak Northwest on the Idaho-Montana line. They thought it would take a little more than 16 hours. It took 22. Nickell said some peaks are hardest because the roads to them are so remote.

- Why might a lower mountain still be harder than the highest one?
- What is a big outdoor goal you could break into small trips?
