The reporting lives at KSAT 12. Our summary is checked against it, and we link it on every story.

San Antonio Zoo and Zoo Miami released 55 Texas horned lizards on a Texas ranch, KSAT 12 reported. The animals are part of a reintroduction project that raises the lizards and returns them to land where the species has thinned out.

This release is one group of 55, from two zoos, on one ranch. It adds animals to the project. It does not mean the species is restored across Texas.

For the classroom

Texas horned lizards are small, spiky lizards that belong in Texas. Their numbers have fallen in a lot of places, so zoos have been raising them and letting them go where the habitat can still support them. San Antonio Zoo and Zoo Miami released 55 of them on a ranch in Texas. A release means the animals leave human care and go back outside. Fifty-five is this one trip, part of a longer reintroduction project, which is the work of putting a species back into land it used to live on. The lizards now have the ranch. The project is not finished just because this group is out.

  1. Why would a zoo raise a wild animal and then let it go?
  2. What does a lizard need in a place if it is going to stay there?
  3. Why count the animals in one release instead of saying they are all back?
