The state Department of Environmental Conservation and the Montezuma Audubon Center opened an improved wildlife observation platform at the Northern Montezuma Wildlife Management Area in Wayne County. A DEC release dated October 8, 2026, said the agency built it with $70,000 from the Environmental Protection Fund. An accessible stone-dust path of about 750 feet runs from the center through restored forest to a gently graded ramp.
The project is part of a wider push, with the National Audubon Society and Rochester Accessible Adventures, to make the wetlands easier to visit. Officials said it gives people of all abilities a place to watch fall migration and other wildlife. It is a viewing spot, not a claim that the refuge's bird numbers have changed.
