At least 13,000 registered walkers stepped out in pink at Midland Beach on Sunday for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, the Staten Island Advance reported. They passed under a pink arch and covered about two miles along the Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk and back.

The walk raised more than $390,000. Some individual fundraisers brought in tens of thousands of dollars on their own. The Advance described it as one of the island's largest community days, a crowd of neighbors who kept running into friends along the route.
