At 7:49 a.m. on October 31, the Galax Fire Department went to the 1800 block of Cranberry Road for a person trapped in a tree, WFXR reported. A hunting stand had collapsed and left the hunter hanging several feet up. Firefighters worked with the Carroll County Sheriff's Office and Pipers Gap Rescue Squad to get him down.
Crews took him to Twin County Regional Healthcare Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Firefighters then went back. They used climbing sticks to retrieve the stand and drove his truck home. There they learned his wife could not drive because of a recent surgery, so they took her, in the family vehicle, to the emergency room and walked her in to her husband.
