Katlehong Primary School has a library of its own, the 100th in a reading project that has been building school libraries since 2010. Engineering News reported on October 28, 2026, that the DP World and Motus Community Trust handed the room over on October 27.

The school in Gauteng has about 1,720 learners. Principal Ben Sidwaba called the opening a day of hope for the children and the community. Each library in the programme stocks books and technology, sets aside space for reading and study, and employs a librarian assistant. Some of those assistants have gone on to teach. The trust says the work has benefited more than 230,000 learners and now reaches about 125,000 a day.

The project began as a maths and science effort in township schools and shifted toward reading after the partners decided literacy had to come first. Engineering News noted a national survey, released in November 2025, that found 15 percent of Grade 3 learners could not read a single word. A new library does not erase that gap. It gives one school a staffed room and a daily reason to open a book.

For the classroom

Engineering News reported that Katlehong Primary School in Gauteng, South Africa, received a library on October 27, 2026. It is the 100th school library in a project run with the DP World and Motus Community Trust. The school has about 1,720 learners. Principal Ben Sidwaba said the day stood for hope. Each library has books, a place to read, and a librarian assistant. The trust says the programme now reaches about 125,000 learners a day. A new room helps children practice reading. It does not, by itself, fix how hard reading is for many children in the country.

  1. What did the new library give the students besides a room full of books?
  2. Why might a school need a person whose job is to help children use the library?
  3. What is one way your class could help more children get books?
