Mount Mabu, in Lugela in Zambezia, is now a community conservation area. BIOFUND reported that Ministerial Diploma No. 69/2026, published on August 24, covers 9,341 hectares. A ceremony on September 11, 2026, in Lugela presented the designation to communities. The mountain rises about 1,700 meters and is known as a sky island. Eleven community committees helped establish CONSERVAMABU, the Community Association for the Conservation of Mount Mabu, which gives communities a structure for taking part in managing the landscape.

BIOFUND names species known from the forest, including the Mount Mabu pygmy chameleon, Rhampholeon maspictus, the bush viper Atheris mabuensis, and the gecko Lygodactylus mabu. Springs on the mountain supply households and farms. The European Union-funded PROMOVE Biodiversidade program supported the legal recognition. The news is the conservation status and the community association named to take part. It is not a new wildlife census, and it does not list finished day-to-day rules.

For the classroom

Mount Mabu rises about 1,700 meters in Zambezia province, Mozambique. People call it a sky island. In 2026 the government named 9,341 hectares a community conservation area. Eleven local committees helped start CONSERVAMABU, an association through which communities take part in looking after the mountain. The forest holds animals found there and almost nowhere else, including a tiny chameleon, a bush viper, and a gecko. Springs that depend on the forest supply homes and farms. The news is this new protection and the community association. It is not a count of every animal on the mountain.
