The New Ulm Public Library added the Heart of New Ulm Community Fridge and Freezer near the children's room. Anyone can take produce or a ready-to-heat meal. There are no questions, no forms, no signup, and no library card.
Brown County's Statewide Health Improvement Partnership funded the fridge with the Food Environment Action Team and the Heart of New Ulm Project. Tom Polich, regional food rescue coordinator for the Region Nine Development Commission in Mankato, restocked it Tuesday. Much of the food would otherwise have gone to a landfill. The library is open evenings and weekends, so people can stop in when a monthly food shelf is not enough.
